The Great Casino of Santander
Since
1890, Santander
has had three casinos and all of them have been built in the same site of El Sardinero. This building has always been
the focal point of the social life in the city. The Casino and the surroundings
had the highest point during the 1930’s when the city was the summer home of
The Royal Family of Spain. Nowadays, the Casino is still the neuralgic spot of
the cultural and social life of Santander.
Its beauty, its facilities and the inside ornaments make the building one of
the most original ones in Spain.
This actual building was built and opened in 1916. It was designed by the architect Eloy Martinez del Valle. All the possible luxuries were used during the building of this eclectic, neoclassic and mannerist site. Martinez del Valle came up with the idea of a gorgeous and white façade made by a huge big central body with two octagonal towers with domes in both corners. The interior is full of lamps with bright crystals, brass silver details, floral ceiling ornaments and angels with rich stoned eyes that will fulfill your wildest expectations. The inside is also decorated with original paintings of the Valencian artist Antonio Gomar, which date from 1916. This artwork is preserved in an immaculate state on the ceiling of the hall and it represents the Cantabrian symbolism.
Today, the Casino has been restored respecting the original idea, dedicating the right wing for gambling and the left wing for the hotel.
