City Hall
The City Hall
of Santander is responsible for governing the city and the municipality of
Santander. It is presided over by the mayor, who since 1979 has been
democratically elected by universal suffrage. The original building consisted of the half of the current building. It was designed in 1897 by the architect Julio Martínez-Zapata and was finally inaugurated on the 15 of September 1907. By then the hall place was called Pí y Margall.
Some years after, it was decided that the building be increased, the final design being that which we know nowadays. It was built in two parts because it had two different owners: the town hall and the bishop, and was finally re-inaugurated in 1967. The city hall is made up of three floors, in which the municipal offices are.
Behind the Hall there is the Mercado de la Esperanza, one of the most important marketplaces in the city; and opposite the oldest neighborhood of the city: el Cabildo de Arriba.
