Centro Cultural Doctor Madrazo

Centro Cultural Doctor Madrazo
The Cultural Centre Doctor Madrazo is situated in the building formerly known as the “Little fish-square of Puertochico,” built in 1984. It was originally located across the street closer to the bay and was transferred stone by stone to its current location.
It was inaugurated as a cultural centre in 1984 and has three floors: one is for exhibitions, another is a public library, and the third floor is an assembly hall.
The building gets its name in honor of the Cantabrian surgeon Dr. Enrique Diego Madrazo Azcona, who was born in 1850 in Vega de Pas. He studied at the Escolapios School in Villacariedo and earned a Doctor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Madrid. He worked with Louis Pasteur in his Parisian laboratory and completed his studies of the prevention of infection in the operating room in Germany. In 1894 he opened a small clinic in Vega de Pas and later moved it to Santander and became the famous Doctor Madrazo Hospital on Santa Lucía Street. He died in 1942 in Santander.
