The first plans to build the present building were for a bigger building than was eventually built. Original plans were to build two churches on top of each other, a church of three aisles and more sections than were finally made.
The lower church (the present Cristo´s parish), which was built in the twelfth century, is preserved in its integrity, and it consists of three aisles of four sections, plus the header apses which were built latter than the rest. The pillars and arches of the vaults are particularly low, and although it could be surprising, it should be considerate that they support the upper church too.
Because of the way of the field is, this first church looks to the north and has a big window and two huge doors, all protected by a court of the same era.
During 1982 and 1983, archaeological excavations were conducted. A lot of remains of an old roman settlement were found, among them thermal installations and important fortifications. The Roman oven room was the place in which the heads of the martyrs Emeterio and Celedonio (patrons of the city) in the Middle Ages were saved. Nowadays, they are in two silver lockets in the lower church, and from there are taken in procession to the altar of the upper church during great festivities.
