The Cabo Mayor Lighthouse
The
Cantabrian Sea (situated in the north of Spain) has a high and jagged coastline
that has always been dangerous for the ships that have come close to it. To
prevent accidents and shipwrecks, the people that lived here warned the
captains of the closeness of the coastline with bonfires and flag signals.
In 1776, the city’s merchants asked the naval captain, Felipe Bouza, to design a lighthouse, although it was Domingo Roji, who eventually designed and built it. It was finished by 1839.
The Cabo Mayor Lighthouse or the Bellavista Lighthouse is made up of two sections: the base is an octagon (with 14m in diameter) and on top of it there is a cylindrical section which is the main tower of the lighthouse. The lighthouse has a total height of 30m from ground level and 91m from sea level.
When the lighthouse was first built, the light spun with a mechanical weight system that consumed half a litre of oil per hour. In 1887, they started using mineral oil, becoming the first lighthouse in Spain to do so. Nowadays the lighthouse functions with electricity from the main power system and it has a backup unit in case there is a major blackout.
In 1935 a house was built next to the lighthouse so that the keepers could live there.
Today, the Cabo Mayor lighthouse is managed by the Santander Port Authority and it’s the most important lighthouse of the nine that are along the Cantabrian shore.

The Cabo Mayor Arte Centre
Thanks to
the installation of new technology the keeper’s position was made redundant and
no-one has lived in the lighthouse since 2001. In 2006 the building was
converted into a museum, The Cabo Mayor Art Centre.
In the Anular Showroom at the base of the lighthouse, you can see a curious amount of objects that have to do with lighthouses.
In the Cabo Mayor Showroom you can visit the permanent collection Sanz-Villar dedicated to Eduardo Sanz, an artist from Santander who was inspired by lighthouses and the sea. You can see an enormous amount of lighthouses from along the Spanish coastline, which he visited for years and that he depicted in his paintings. You can also see other paintings by Spanish artists that were inspired by lighthouses.
In the Cabo Menor Showroom, you can see more of Sanz-Villar’s collection, as well as temporary exhibitions.

The Exterior
Near the
lighthouse, you can observe a monument in remembrance of the people who were
thrown over the cliff during the Spanish Civil War. Emilio Pino Patiño, mayor
of Santander, asked Lavin del Noval, town architect, and Jose Villalobos, a
sculptor from Castro, to design the monument, which was inaugurated in 1941.
The monument consists of a cross with a person trying to hang on to it, placed
on a pedestal overlooking the cliff.
The views from this lookout are spectacular.
Near the cliff, behind the monument, a siren was installed in 1954 (that sounds when there is fog), and 4 years later a radio beacon was installed in the tower.
